The annual Pinks were announced yesterday by Dublin University Central Athletics Club (DUCAC), with 18 athletes and 11 different clubs represented.

Pinks are the highest sporting award Trinity can bestow and are presented by DUCAC on the basis of outstanding individual merit.

Leading the way this year are Dublin University Harriers and Athletics Club (DUHAC), with three nominees. This comes on the back of a successful year for the club, which included the task of hosting the weather-impacted Irish Universities Athletics Association (IUAA) Cross Country Intervarsities. Their effort has been recognised by DUCAC, with club captain Clíona Murphy being named on this year’s list.

Dublin University Ladies Boat Club (DULBC) are also represented, with the club collecting two scarves. Caoimhe Dempsey and Lauren McHugh are the club’s representatives. DULBC have enjoyed a fruitful season which included a dramatic colours win over University College Dublin (UCD), as the men’s and women’s teams completed an historic double over their near neighbours.

Also recognised in today’s announcement is Dublin University Football Club’s (DUFC) Seb Fromm, who was one of several Trinity players that featured on the international rugby scene this year. The DUFC centre was called up to the German national side last November for their clash with Chile in the Autumn International series. He is joined on this year’s list by clubmates Daniel Joyce, Samuel Pim and Brian Slater. Trinity Camogie star Aisling Maher, who won an All-Star this year following a superb season with the Dublin Senior panel, has also been rewarded by DUCAC.

In a statement to Trinity Sport, DUHAC’s Kate Doherty was quick to praise the support network provided by the College: “The gym training in Trinity with Brian Slater (strength and conditioning coach) has greatly improved my strength and speed. Harriers and my own club, Dundrum South Dublin, have played a huge role. A past Harriers athlete, Laura Frey, has really influenced my athletics and I hope to follow in her footsteps.”

Doherty caught the attention of many in athletics circles following an excellent performance at this years IUAA Universities where she shaved a second off her personal best in the 100m hurdles, setting a Trinity record and clinching bronze in the process.

The winners will be presented with their awards at tonight’s annual Trinity Sport awards at Clontarf Castle. The male athletes will receive pink ties while the female athletes will be presented with pink scarves.
