Coming soon: UTSports’ Fantasy Rugby World Cup

UT Sports are delighted to announce that we will be launching our very own Fantasy Rugby World Cup competition ahead of the 2011 Rugby World Cup in New Zealand. Teams can be registered from August 22nd, when all 20 competing nations announce their squads and our team release lists of players and their values.

The rules are as follows:

  • Max. two teams per person
  • Participants will have to assemble their team with a budget of €100m.
  • No Fantasy Team may contain more than four players from any one nation.
  • UTSports staff will update the scoreboard every evening and the results will be posted on The University Times website (www.universitytimes.ie), the broadsheet itself, and by the Twitter account @Sports_UT
  • Players will be categorised by position and participants will have to choose players from within their assigned positions (e.g. no designated wingers may be selected at full-back unless the national side itself makes that choice)
  • In the event of a tie, participants will be separated on the basis of 1. Highest-scoring round 2. Largest number of teams from which the scoring players have been obtained 3. Tie declared.
  • Each participant can designate a team captain who shall receive double points.
  • By virtue of having a Trinity College degree, Scott Lavalla (USA) is automatically awarded triple points.

Points are scored as follows:

  • Starting appearance: +5 points
  • Substitute appearance: +2 points
  • Try: +5 points
  • Drop-goal: +3 points for a back, +6 for a forward.
  • Penalty goal: +3 points for a back, +10 points for a forward.
  • Winning try (try must be last try scored for winning team in a winning margin of less than or equal to 7 points): +8 points
  • >3 scrums taken against the head: +/- 5 points for front-row players
  • >3 line-outs taken against the throw: +5 points for second-row players, -3 for hookers.
  • Yellow card: -5 points
  • Red Card: Player awarded 0 points for tournament
  • Bonus for scoring 80%+ of winning team’s points: +7 points
  • Bonus for hat-trick of tries: +6 points
  • Recognised kicker off-day penalty (>3 missed efforts): -3 points
  • Fumble costing side a try: -3 points
  • 100% kicking bonus (3+ kicks): +6 points
  • Cross-field kick bonus: +3 for kicker and scorer
  • Solo try bonus (run from inside own half): +3 points
  • Top points-scorer bonus: +10 points
  • Top try-scorer bonus: +10 points
  • Winning captain bonus: +1 points
  • Losing captain penalty: -1 point
