A steak dinner for €13 that is not as tough as Chuck Norris or as chewy as Chewbacca was almost unheard of until now. Enter Featherblade, the new kid on the Dawson Street block, where their steak is often the only main course on the menu. The interior is comfortable enough even if the tables are perhaps a little close. It’s all dark colours and muted tones giving it a clean and classic feel while maintaining a contemporary edge.
The menu is small, tasty and shows how “good things come in small packages”. There is one menu for the food which lists, of course, the featherblade steak, and usually one other cut on offer along with some sides and sauces. The drinks menu covers wine, cocktails and beers.
The starters were priced at €8. We tried the confit of chicken with hot sauce and the salmon poke with sweet potato crisps. Both were simple, well-executed and tasty dishes. The chicken was tasty and the sauce was rich with a kick. The salmon poke was not really to my taste, but my friend wasn’t long finishing it off so that’s a good sign.
So now to the steaks. The Featherblade steak is a beautiful, tender piece of meat, while the garlic, chilli and herbs it comes with really awakens your taste buds. The other steak was skirt steak which had more texture to it. It was equally good and the Béarnaise sauce was rich, buttery and high on herb notes.
The sides are €3.50 and we got two different ones. First was truffle mac and cheese which was was like taking your everyday, firm favourite and pimping it to the next level of taste. I had my steak with beef dripping fries which is a genius combination and a total win.
To finish, it was a lemongrass panacotta. Sweet, thick cream with a contrasting heat from the lemongrass was a beautifully light finish as were the two glasses of wine we enjoyed. Ultimately we enjoyed simple, good food and steak at an affordable price tag of only €13. Put a feather in your cap Featherblade, you earned it.
