On Friday, February 9th, a thrilling day of music will take place at the Golden Voices of Hollywood event in Dublin’s National Concert Hall.
Classic musical hits from the cinema of Hollywood’s Golden Age will be brought new life through the talents of soprano Sandra Oman, baritone Simon Morgan and actress Ruth McGill. This trio will pay a musical tribute to some of the greatest performers of film history. Songs made famous by the likes of Gordon MacRae, Howard Keel, Kathryn Grayson and Shirley Jones will be heard at this delightful event. The songbooks of these particular performers will form the structure of the evening, promising to present the best songs from all of their best films.
The show’s fun structure will see McGill embrace the role of infamous Hollywood gossip columnist Hedda Hopper as she introduces each much-loved song. Unforgettable numbers from films such as Showboat, Oklahoma!, Carousel, Kiss Me Kate and Seven Brides for Seven Brothers will all be heard over the course of the show, promising to make the MGM dream factory a reality for its lucky audience. Be sure to keep an ear out for such lauded musical mainstays as “Oh What A Beautiful Morning”, “Can’t Help Lovin’ That Man of Mine”, “Ol’ Man River”, “Another Op’ning, Another Show” and “Bless Your Beautiful Hide”.
The show is sure to stimulate both the minds and hearts of its guests as Hedda Hopper details the real-life rags-to-riches stories of the celebrated legendary performers. Between magical musical numbers, the colourful lives of MacRae, Keel, Grayson and Jones will be told in exciting and perhaps never-before-heard detail, bringing a deeper layer of meaning to each song performed. It will be as if these Hollywood icons are being brought back to life upon the stage of the National Concert Hall in what will inevitably be an immersive experience, as backstage tales contextualize show-stopping songs.
This star-studded event will take place at the easy-going afternoon time of 1.05pm, giving attendees the chance to “make a day of it”, and pop off for dinner and a drink afterwards in any one of the wide range of bars and restaurants in the surrounding area, thanks to the venue’s accessible placement in Dublin’s city centre. Standard tickets are €18, but students can go for only €16, a true steal for an afternoon of Hollywood glamour.
