Close to 30 Trinity staff members took to the streets today to canvass for a repeal of the eighth amendment.
With staff from across various faculties, departments and divisions, today’s canvass saw dozens of leaflets handed out at Nassau St, College Green and other streets surrounding College.
Speaking to The University Times, Senator Ivana Bacik, who is also the Reid Professor of Criminal Law, Criminology and Penology, said: “It’s really important to see so many Trinity staff out here canvassing for a yes vote in the referendum. Trinity has a very proud tradition of standing for women’s rights and women’s health.”
“I’m blown away by the response”, she said. In a meeting last week, Trinity Staff Together for Yes acknowledged that a vote for repeal would mean shifting Ireland’s culture.
With less than two weeks until the referendum, both sides are upping their efforts in a bid to reach undecided voters. On Saturday, thousands of pro-life supporters attended a rally at Merrion Square.
Trinity College Dublin Students’ Union (TCDSU) has been canvassing around College in recent weeks, after months of activity in support of repeal.
