The last of the stalls at Freshers’ Fair may have been packed away on Friday, but societies are by no means finished staging exciting events. They will be kept busy trying to prove themselves worthy of your membership so be sure to get involved and see what they have to offer!
Monday:
The College Historical Society (the Hist) may well have outdone itself this week, playing host to music legend Dionne Warwick. A five-time Grammy Award-winning artist, Warwick’s career spans over five decades and is one filled with stories of success and inspiration. The music icon will speak to the Hist in the Graduates Memorial Building (GMB) Chamber at 2.30pm. The event is for members only, but membership may be bought at the door. Be sure to get there early to secure a seat or else “say a little prayer” that you can squeeze yourself into what is sure to be a jam-packed gathering.
Tuesday:
Head over to JW Sweetman’s pub at 7pm and let DU History Society transport you back to the days of neon leg-warmers and shoulder pads. The society has planned a 1980s-themed mixer for all you Abba lovers out there, transporting you to a time when Michael Jackson fever took hold and pacman was the main source of entertainment. The event will be a great way for the society’s new members and any history fiends to get to know one another and maybe discuss Reagan’s Star Wars. Entry is free for all DU History members or membership is €3 at the door.
Wednesday:
Trinity Zoological Society, Trinity Environmental Society and DU Conservation Society have come together to welcome speakers from Seal Rescue Ireland this Wednesday at the Paccar Lecture Theatre in the Science Gallery. Starting at 5pm, the speakers will discuss the organisation’s work and show how you can get involved and make a difference. Get there early and to enjoy some free snacks at the reception beforehand.
Thursday:
Join VDP in the Thomas Davis theatre this Thursday at 7pm for the society’s introductory evening. The society will delve into their plans for the year and will be on hand to answer any questions you might have. The group will give you all the details you need on its 41 weekly activities with children, the homeless and adults with intellectual disabilities, as well as the society’s famous trips away including the Camino, Jailbreak and Insmot. If you are looking to get involved with VDP, this get-together is the perfect way to get all the information you need and meet your new VDP friends.
Friday:
Head over to the GMB at 2pm to catch a glimpse of renowned British rapper and producer, Dizzee Rascal. The Brit Award-winner will be welcomed into the University Philosophical Society’s esteemed chamber to receive the Phil’s Gold Medal of Honorary Patronage. His rise to fame at a young age and trail-blazing path to success has certainly been a source of inspiration for many and offers no better reason to try and grab a seat for the event.
