Student filmmakers rejoice. A new platform is open to you to showcase your work, and its making its home in one of Dublin’s most notorious student spots. The Film Scene will have its inaugural evening on November 6th in the Workman’s Club, showcasing the best in student-led filmmaking. A monthly event by students and for students, the event aims to give student filmmakers a chance to stretch their legs, gauge reaction to their work, and meet other like-minded auteurs. The event is run by a collective of film fans and students from across Dublin.

The line-up of films includes pieces by directors Melanie O’Donnell, Susannah Hunt, Abigail Woods, Luke Murphy, and Craig Johnston. The event will feature a diverse range of work. Murphy’s Feel deals with a young woman coming to terms with an abusive relationship, while Woods’s Hunting takes the form of a mockumentary that follows a young vampire reaching the age of maturity. There’s clearly something at The Film Scene for everyone, and it’s sure to be a rip-roaring extravaganza. But the real kicker? It’s completely free.

The Film Scene will be a monthly event, with students invited to submit their films over email. Anything can be submitted, along with a short description of the filmmaker, and their interests. The basic idea of the event seems to be centered around networking. As filmmakers, students often find themselves stuck in a rut, with no clear community to ground themselves in. Like their films, their community is built by them from the ground up. With The Film Scene, students will finally be given the chance to meet other members of their niche, in a safe space, a place to make old friends and new and embrace the homemade nature of the films that bring us together. The Film Scene will take place on November 6th at 7.30pm in the Workman’s Club.
