With hustings, campaigning, and dodging brightly coloured t-shirts in the Arts Block, it can feel like the Trinity College Dublin Students’ Union (TCDSU) sabbatical officer elections have taken over campus. Outside the realm of politics, however, there is plenty more for students to enjoy this week, with talks and parties galore taking place across college. Whether you’re looking to dodge TCDSU candidates or simply find something to do between lecturers, be sure to check out the range of events going on in the week ahead!
Tuesday
Join the University Philosophical Society (the Phil) and Trinity Global Development Society in welcoming Dr Roja Fazaeli, a lecturer in Islamic civilisations for the Department of Near and Middle Eastern Studies in Trinity, for A Talk on Islam and Feminism. Chairperson of the Immigrant Council of Ireland and member of the Editorial Board of the Journal of Religious and Human Rights, Fazaeli is an accomplished figure, most suited to provide an in insightful discussion on Islam and feminism. Join her in the Graduates Memorial Building (GMB) at 6pm for what is sure to be an interesting and prescient discussion.
Wednesday
On the more artistic side of things, Dublin University Photography Association (DUPA) will be hosting photographer Mark William Logan this Wednesday for what promises to be a stand-out, enlightening event. Logan will lead a portrait and self-portrait workshop for attendees in room 4050A at 6pm, before a questions-and-answers session at the end, when he will divulge his best-kept secrets on life as pioneering Irish photographer, and all that he has learnt through his craft.
That isn’t all on Wednesday, as DU Psychological Society (Psych Soc) and DU Gender Equality Society (DUGES) are joining forces to host a fascinating panel discussion investigating the gender-based challenges people in academia are faced with. Taking place in the Global Room from 5.30 until 7pm, the panel will be made up of Dr Frédérique Vallierés, Dr Clare Kelly, Dr Emilie Pine, Dr Pablo Gracia and Shubhangi Karmakar. These speakers will come together to look at key struggles such as work-life balance, parental leave and division of labour.
Thursday
This week will certainly be of interest for those concerned with women’s and gender issues, as
Trinity Law Society (Law Soc) heralds International Women’s Day celebrations with a group of trailblazing women who will explore what it is to be a leading woman in contemporary Ireland. The Women in Leadership Panel Discussion will consist of both a talk and a Q&A with the likes of Sinead Burke, a disability and fashion activist, Dee Forbes, the first female Director-General of RTE, and Iseult Ward, co-founder and CEO of FoodCloud. Online registration is required and can be made through the event’s Facebook page. The event will take place in Regent House from 7pm till 10pm.
Friday
After a week of interesting and challenging discussion, Friday brings the time to party, right before reading week when we’ll all be … doing our reading? Trinity’s collective Notions returns once again to deliver yet another party of gargantuan proportions. The group has enlisted one of house music’s most popular names, Kornel Kovacs, to lead the night. The Swedish DJ has been the subject of popular acclaim following the release of EPs with pioneering labels including Unknown To The Unknown, Numbers and his own Studio Barnhus. Tickets for the event, taking place in the Button Factory from 11pm, range from €12 to €15 and can be purchased through Eventbrite.
