Having missed the famously anti-climatic Christmas tree lighting in Front Square and notoriously messy 12 pubs, some might feel like Christmas in Trinity just is not the same this year. However, Trinity’s societies have been working hard to ensure that there is no shortage of Christmas cheer around campus. So, grab some mulled wine, throw on your finest Christmas jumper and log onto Zoom to let Trinity’s societies bring Christmas to you.
Monday
In place of their music festival performances of a standard year, Trinity Orchestra have, this Christmas, decided to put on a week-long virtual festival. Lockdown Palooza will be launching today with the release of their first performance on various social media platforms. Whether you are an ABBA stan or Leonard Cohen fanatic, the lineup has something for everyone. Not only is this event sure to be oozing with talent, but it is also for a good cause. Trinity Orchestra will be raising money for Pieta House and the Dublin Rape Crisis Centre throughout the week. If you would like to donate, the link to their GoFundMe is in their Instagram bio (@trinity_orchestra). Follow Trinity Orchestra on Facebook and Instagram to keep up to date with Lockdown Palooza throughout the week.
Tuesday
If you would like to test whether you really deserved that H2 in leaving certificate Irish, look no further than the maidens na Gaeilge debating final, this Tuesday at 7pm. Cumann Gaelach TCD and Trinity Traditional Irish Music Society are putting together a Christmas games night to follow the debate. You can expect bingo, charades and chatting! Not only does the event have its very own Spotify playlist, but TradSoc will also be providing some live music.
Trinity Ents, Trinity Hall JCR and Trinity College Law Society (LawSoc) are collaborating to bring you Trinity Baubelle. This cocktail class will be livestreamed on Youtube from 8pm. Trinity Hall’s Alex Clarke and LawSoc’s Ruth Brady will be showing you how to make festive drinks like eggnog and hot chocolate with a twist. There will also be mocktails for the pioneers among us. This event is a must if you want to compete for the coveted position as your parents’ favourite child by making many a festive drink over the coming weeks.
Wednesday
DU Geographical Society is hosting Tipsy Quizmas on Wednesday at 8pm. If you are a competitive freeloader like me, you will be thrilled to hear that the winner of the quiz will receive a prize from The Masked Lizard. No need to worry if you are not a geography expert, the quiz goes far beyond GeogSoc’s usual boundaries with themed rounds like “2020 Rewind” and “Christmas”.
Thursday
Join Trinity Vegan Society and DU Amnesty at 6pm on Thursday evening for Speaking Up While Cooking Up. VeganSoc chairperson, Nicky, will be cooking a vegan Colombian meal, while some of Amnesty’s committee members speak about activism in Colombia and Turkey.
Trinity’s official Christmas Ball is taking place on Thursday at 9pm. Trinity Ents will be livestreaming the event on Youtube, which is in aid of Peter McVerry Trust. While I would prefer to be three jager bombs deep in the Grand Social in a Santa hat, even I must admit that the impressive lineup is a small consolation.
Friday
If you’ve been feeling a bit uncultured lately, then you should end your week with a trip to the virtual theatre. DU Player’s latest production Gull tells the story of Ava, whose life is disrupted when two seagulls, Noel and Pippa, nest in her kitchen. Childlike magic meets grown-up anxiety in this audio play, which will be available on the DU Players Spotify from this Friday. It is accompanied by a zine containing activities, visuals and writings which is free to pre-order now through the link on the Facebook event.
