Trinity Ball has been cancelled for the second year in a row due to the coronavirus pandemic.
The Trinity Ball committee decided this week that holding the event “would not be feasible” due to changing coronavirus restrictions in Ireland.
In an email statement to The University Times, Trinity College Dublin Students’ Union Ents officer Hugh McInerney said: “The Trinity Ball Committee had a meeting this week and unfortunately, due to the uncertainty of public health restrictions and the rapidly changing regulations, the TBC have advised the capitations committee that holding a ball in 2021 would not be feasible.”
Ireland is due to remain in level-five lockdown until at least March 5th.
“I raised and argued strongly for the possibility of a ball later in the year”, McInerney said, “but the committee decided that with the numerous factors surrounding large events in Ireland and how the situation can drastically change in a matter of days, it would be safer to cancel the ball for 2021 and focus on a return to Trinity Ball in April 2022”.
“We are of course extremely disappointed by the cancellation of the ball for a second year in a row, but public health and student safety understandably has to come first.”
Trinity Ball was also cancelled last year due to the pandemic. Students were given full refunds for their tickets.
Speaking to The University Times at the time, then-TCDSU Ents officer Judith Robinson said: “This is very unfortunate as we had a fantastic lineup and a massive amount of work was put into preparing for the ball.”
“But it is for the best, as everyone’s health and wellbeing is what’s most important at the moment.”
Last year’s line-up for Trinity Ball – set to be the highlight of the year for many students – included Eat Everything, Rejjie Snow and DJ Seinfield, and was to be headlined by Tinie Tempah, who also played at the ball in 2010. The 2019 acts included the Coronas and singer-songwriter Mabel.
The 2020 line-up was leaked accidentally on Facebook by Rejjie Snow, hours before the official line-up.
Online tickets for last year’s Ball sold out within two hours.
