What’s historic, exciting and something you’ll happily miss many lectures for? If you’re reading this article, you already know it’s Trinity’s societies. April is fast approaching, which basically means it’s May, which basically means it’s Summer. So before another academic year is over, take advantage of the myriad of society events at your fingertips!

Monday

Like last week, this week’s event calendar is midweek-skewed, so there’s not much to mention for Monday or Friday. This doesn’t mean you can skip out on Trinity Knitting Society’s weekly 6pm class, though. You know you’ve always wanted to go, and you’re quickly running out of excuses!

Trinity’s Law Gazette, the Eagle, is now accepting submissions for its final issue of term. Now is your chance to finally submit that article that’s been sitting in your drafts.

Similarly, there’s just under two weeks left to submit a piece for the Eagle and Trinity FLAC’s essay competition, “Gender Inequality in the Protection and Administration of the Law”. Start writing, because the prizes up for grabs for the best submissions are sponsored by the filthy-rich Maples Group, so you know they’re going to be good!

Tuesday

Trinity’s literary and arts magazine Icarus recently came out with its second issue of the year which was snapped up with impressive speed. Campus will be restocked with more copies on Tuesday, so keep your eyes peeled and your reading corner cosy.

At 4pm, beauty blogger and author Holly White will address DU Vegan Society. Her book Veganish aims to help people transition to veganism and her insights should be useful if a vegan 2021 is somewhere on your bucket list.

At 6pm, the Society of International Affairs (SOFIA) is collaborating with DU French Society to host a panel event titled “France and West Africa – Neocolonialist Legacies”. The speakers include academics like Dr Ndongo Samba Sylla, Prof Tony Chafer, Dr Natalya Vince and Prof Adwoa Ofori, and will examine the cultural, economic and military legacies of French colonialism in West Africa.

There are a few blockbuster events that reappear on the Trinity society calendar every year, and you’ll be happy to hear that one is happening this Tuesday. As you may have seen from the vibrant social media campaign, Trinity Vincent de Paul (VDP)’s annual pantomime will kick off at 7pm. This year it’s Toy Story: To Infinity And Beyond. Attendees should prepare for a toy-filled, hilarious Zoom show by a cast of 25. Entry is free but attendees can buy raffle tickets in hopes of winning some fabulous prizes.

Wednesday

If you’re able to wake up by noon on Wednesday after the panto the night before, TCD Environmental Society (EnviroSoc), DU Amnesty, Trinity Korean Society and QSoc will collaborate to make protest art. A reiteration of Enviro Soc’s weekly eco-crafts group, this week’s theme is in response to the current state of the world – though perhaps we can find some community in the chaos.

The rest of Wednesday is jam-packed, so buckle up! TradSoc has its Chats n Choons virtual hangout from 1:30–2:30pm, and will release another artist of the month video and tunes class on its Instagram (@tcdtradsoc)! If you’re a queer woman, QSoc is hosting a closed space for wlw at 3pm where you can come – worry free – to listen, chat and bond with others about your experiences.

At 6:30pm, Trinity VDP is hosting a virtual cooking class as part of the #March4MASI campaign. This event will be in collaboration with the Biafriend group who offer cooking lessons taught by asylum seekers, refugees, and migrants in order to promote integration, culture sharing, and generate awareness about Direct Provision in Ireland. Attendees will learn how to make a vegetarian Zimbabwean peanut stew! At 7pm, after you’ve let your food stew, DU Modern Languages have a big Zoom quiz where prizes like Easter eggs, book tokens and JustEat vouchers will be up for grabs.

End your Wednesday with another blockbuster event: the long anticipated comedy debate collaboration between Cumann Gaelach, Trinity Law Society (LawSoc) and the Cumann Gaelach of Queen’s University Belfast. The crème de la crème of Trinity debaters, law students, Gaeilgóirí and quick-witted Northern orators will take part in this (mostly) Irish language event where the outrageous motion is: “Ba chóir don Rialtas a rialú a dhéanamh go hiomlán trí Ghaeilge”. If you didn’t understand that, someone at the debate will tell you what it means.

Thursday

While Wednesday is looking wild, Thursday is less so. That is apart from DU General Science Society’s event at 5pm where they will speak to superstar YouTuber Veritasium. Derek Muller’s channel explains various scientific phenomena in an easily understandable and entertaining way. It has over 8.5 million subscribers, and soon you’ll be one of them!

Later on, you can either choose to partake in Law Soc’s first round of its Maidens debating competition or attend the QSoc AGM, both at 7pm.

Friday

Fortunately for your grades, there aren’t any major events to report on this Friday. Good Friday is doing you some good. Who’d have thought?
