The annual student-organised Trinity Med Day fundraiser is taking place this Friday 5th November.

More than 600 med students will take to the streets of Dublin city from early in the morning to collect money to help fund essential hospital services.

Since its inception in 2002, Med Day has raised over €900,000 in funds for research projects, medical equipment and healthcare facilities in Trinity-affiliated teaching hospitals.

This year, Med Day is campaigning to support several outstanding beneficiaries such as the purchase of equipment for “giving a voice to ventilated patients” in Tallaght University Hospital.

The speech and language therapy team in Tallaght Hospital want to purchase a software package and accompanying equipment that enables patients in intensive care to communicate and control their environment.

This equipment will allow patients, who are unable to speak due to being ventilated or otherwise, to communicate with medical staff or loved ones while in intensive care.

They also hope to raise funds for the purchase of an Automated Chemotherapy Preparation Robot for cancer treatment in St James’s Hospital alongside other essential equipment to help patients in St James’s Hospital and Tallaght University Hospital.

Some of these essential services include exercise equipment for patients in St. James’s Hospital who are undergoing haematopoietic stem cell transplantation.

This equipment aims to improve fitness and reduce frailty in patients undergoing this procedure and overall improve their recovery.

If you would like to donate to the Trinity Med Day campaign you can text MED 50300 to donate €4 to their beneficiaries in St James’s Hospital or find more information here.
