Did you all spend our Halloween weekends catching up on essays instead of trick or treating, or was that just me? In any case, this week will give you plenty more opportunities to dress up and get up to no good.
Tuesday
For a wholesome way to brighten the day of a nursing home resident, and experience some chit chat and laughter in the process, come along to Trinity Vincent de Paul’s (VDP) letter-writing session. In this weekly activity, VDP gets together to write letters to some of those who need it most. This week, everyone will meet at 2pm in Gazebos 11 and 14.
In the meantime, over at Gazebo 12, Trinity VDP will also start selling tickets for its GAGA weekend at 2pm. GAGA stands for Give And Get Away, rather than the living legend, and by giving €60 to the society, you can join the journey to Slane for a weekend of painting, playing games and making friends. The weekend away itself will take place from this Friday, November, 5th to Sunday, November 7th.
Also at 2pm, the Trinity Environmental Society will join the Fashion Society for a vintage shop crawl. Avid thrifters or beginner sustainable buyers can meet at the Bank of Ireland on College Green for an afternoon of charity shop hunting.
At 4pm in Gazebo four, DU Pagan Society will host its Day of the Dead altar. To honour loved ones who have passed, you can bring along pictures and food offerings and join in on the commemorations.
Wednesday
At 12pm in Costa on Nassau Street, DU Film is having a Video Café Book Club. Come armed with a film recommendation and get one in return.
DU Pagan Society will join DU Hispanic Society in the Uí Chadhain Theatre (Arts Block room 2041B) at 6pm for a showing of Pixar’s Coco. This screening is ideal for those wanting to practice their Spanish or learn more about Mexican traditions (or have a good cry).
At 7pm, Trinity Mathematical Society and DU Physics Society will host their Estimathon in Kalabasa Market on Abbey St. In this quiz, guessing is better than knowing – a sample question would be: “How many windows are there in New York?” This ticketed event is sponsored by SIG Susquehanna, and attendees are in for a chance to win a prize or two.
At 8.30pm, Timothée Chalamet fans (and more serious film connoisseurs) can join DU Film in Front Square to walk over to the IFI for a showing of The French Dispatch, and a pint afterward to discuss how good Timothée looked – sorry, to discuss the film.
Thursday
We’re back with another shameless self-plug – The University Times’ own Opinion Editor Caoimhe Weakliam will host an opinion writing workshop on Thursday morning. If you’ve dreamed of sharing your hot takes with the world (or at least the Trinity community), we’ll be in Gazebo one at 11am.
DU Pagan Society and Trinity Literary Society will host a “Spookeasy” at 7pm in Kalabasa Market, and attendees are welcome to bring content to read – whether it’s your own writing or someone else’s. To entice you even further, cocktails will be two for a tenner.
Friday
Friday is Med Day, the DU Biological Association’s biggest event of the year. The annual fundraising event is run by medical students and supports worthy causes in Trinity-affiliated hospitals. Find and kindly donate to any one of the 600 medical students who will take to the streets of Dublin to fundraise for essential hospital services.
At 11am, DU Pagan Society will join DU Gender Equality Society in Gazebo 11 to discuss the links between witchcraft and feminism.
The Society for International Affairs (SOFIA) will host a Halloween-themed pub quiz in O’Neill’s on Suffolk St kicking off at 6pm. Tickets are €3 apiece and a prize will be given to the best-dressed attendee.
