Trinity College Dublin Students’ Union (TCDSU) presidential candidate Gabi Fullam has received a minor strike from the Electoral Commission (EC).
A social media user shared a post from Fullam’s Twitter campaign page.
In an email statement to The University Times, Chair of the EC Adam Balchin said that candidates are under no obligation to inform the student newspapers as to the “reasons the EC has sanctioned them”.
“Under Schedule 3 Regulations, we are not obliged to inform the newspapers of the reasons why strikes are given”, he said.
The University Times has contacted Fullam and her team for comment.
Schedule three, which lays out the rules of the election, states: “If a candidate receives more than three minor strikes they will be struck off the ballot.”
“Similarly, if a candidate receives two major strikes a decision will be made at the discretion of the EC as to whether they will remain on the ballot.”
Candidates will face into the media hustings this Thursday at 7pm.

An earlier version of this article incorrectly implied that Gabi Fullam was given a minor strike for posting on social media outside campaign hours. In fact, she was given a strike because a Twitter user shared one of her posts outside the permitted campaign hours.
