A campaign has been launched re-open nominations for the University Times editor race, following allegations of journalistic misconduct by sole candidate Mairead Maguire.

Maguire has said the story is “wholly false and defamatory”.

The RON campaign is asking students to vote to re-open nominations because “it is a necessity for those running for positions to be scrutinised and held accountable”.

Right now, Maguire is the only candidate contesting the editorship of The University Times.

The option to vote to re-open nominations is available in all union leadership races. The last time a campaign to re-open nominations for a TCDSU race was in 2019 when Muireann Kane ran unopposed for the union’s Communications and Marketing Officer.

In a statement to The University Times, Maguire said that “there is a reason that re-open nominations is an option on every ballot paper in TCDSU elections – students are free to decide in every race that none of the candidates are up to the job.”

“I’m looking forward to talking with students over the next two weeks – and telling them about my plans for The University Times”, she added.

The University Times has contacted the RON campaign for comment.
