The Trinity Summer Series is set to return this June, featuring acts including American pop group HAIM and English alternative rock band Keane.

The series was cancelled last year and the year before due to the pandemic. Several of the confirmed acts for this year were due to play last year.

Alongside HAIM and Keane, Crowded House, the Specials and seven-time Grammy winner Beck will also perform. British singer Michael Kiwanuka is also in the lineup, but is yet to confirm the rescheduled date for his concert.

The series will take place over six days at the end of June and beginning of July.

First held in the summer of 2017, the event has featured a raft of international stars including Vampire Weekend who headlined the series in 2019.

Tickets for several of the shows are currently available for between €45 and €50 on Ticketmaster.

Speaking to The University Times in 2017 about the Trinity Summer Series, then-Provost Patrick Prendergast said: “When we have an opportunity to make money from events, we need to do it. Every university is doing it … and this is generating revenue we can use for academic purposes.”

In 2020, Trinity said it was set to lose out on up to €40 million in commercial revenue that year alone, due to the closure of the Book of Kells and disruptions to various other streams of income due to the pandemic.

Thomas Deane, a Trinity media relations officer, wrote in an email statement to The University Times at the time that “initial projections “indicate an impact of €35m to €40m in the current financial year (to 30 September 2020) with a significant portion of these losses attributable to lost commercial revenue in the summer months”.

He said it “is difficult to assess the full financial impacts with any certainty as forecasts and advice continue to change”.

Earlier this week, The University Times revealed that musicians Malaki and Gracey will be included in the lineup for this year’s Trinity Ball. The ball is returning this year after a two-year hiatus due to the pandemic.

In an email statement to this newspaper, Trinity College Dublin Students’ Union Ents Officer Greg Arrowsmith said: “We’re delighted to announce these two up and coming but very different talents. Gracey’s style of pop is making real waves, garnering her a large monthly followership with lots more to come.”

“Meanwhile Malaki, who is produced by and performs with final-year Trinity student Matthew Harris (aka Chameleon), is a rising force in Ireland’s rap and spoken word scene. His performances last year at the online Trinity Festival were eye-catching, and he has emerged from a lockdown in which he released the ‘Chrysalis EP’ with a sold-out Irish tour. His unique style and intense energy on stage make him one that’s not to be missed at this year’s Trinity Ball.”

The rest of the lineup will be announced on Monday, March 21st. Tickets go on sale on Wednesday, March 23rd.
