Students logged in for online module enrolment at one p.m. to find the My TCD website crashing, in what has become a common occurrence during high-traffic periods.

Multiple Trinity students spoke to The University Times about the upset they experienced from having missed out on their preferred classes due to technical issues, as well as the stress the collapse of the website caused them.

Law student Yusuf Murray said, “[S]pent about 55 mins in total for module selection, wasn’t able to get my first choice in one module by the time it finally confirmed. As a neurodivergent final year with accommodations from DS [the Disability Service], I was really hoping to avoid any exams because they just don’t work for my learning style, but now am left having to do an exam.”

Murray further added that he doesn’t “understand why Trinity can’t hire extra cloud server capacity for days like these – it’s not expensive or difficult, I know much smaller operations that do it.”

English student Rhiannon O’Leary described her frustration as“[C]licking anything at all caused the website to crash”.

“I went through a similar process again and again before phoning the academic registry, the person on the phone was very kind but there wasn’t much they could do, they said it was like this every year.” Regarding the difficulty choosing modules, O’Leary said “getting tickets to the Eras tour was an easier process”.

To her further consternation, some of the modules listed for enrolment on the website had been canceled for the 24/25 academic year.

English student James Murphy described similar disappointment when the website “full on crashed for ten minutes”, adding that he “got my choices, but plenty of people didn’t”.

One student relayed that many in her course group chat were unable to access the website for over 50 minutes, describing  the online module enrolment experience as “an unfair and stressful scramble amongst students to pick the modules they wanted and some were lucky while others weren’t”.

The module enrolment process is coordinated by the Academic Registry. Students experiencing issues with online module enrolment can contact [email protected]e with their issues or visit their help desk in the Hamilton building.
