It’s that time of the year again, Green Week, where Trinity hosts a week of events to highlight a range of issues all to do with our planet and the environment. With the effects of climate change becoming increasingly difficult to ignore, our sustainability team has a lot to consider when it comes to organising events. Not to mention the fact that last year’s Green Week was considered a flop by students across campus, even going as far as to accuse our college of greenwashing. With that, let’s see what’s in store for this year’s event.
This year’s Green Week will last from Monday, March 10th to Friday, March 14th. All week there will be a clothes swap in the Arts building, where you can bring a piece of clothing you no longer use and exchange it for a lightly loved but new-to-you piece.
TUESDAY
On Tuesday from 12 to 1 pm, there will be a talk at the Loyola Institute on the ethical issues of climate change, particularly to do with human displacement. Then, from 5 to 6 pm in the business school will be a talk by ‘de-influencer’ Shannen Healy, whose social media platform @_Greengal aims to promote sustainability and educate followers on what action they can take to mitigate the effects of climate change, particularly in Ireland.
WEDNESDAY
On Wednesday from 9:30 to 10:30 am the Business School will host the Sustainability and Leadership Awards and Photo Competition 2025. Then from 12 to 2 pm, there’ll be a workshop on fashion waste in the Business School, focusing on issues such as health risks, pollution, greenwashing, wasteful practices, and exploitation and abuse of workers. Towards the end, participants will also get the chance to deploy their new knowledge and create their own upcycled pieces. From 1 to 2 pm in Foster Place, there’ll be a talk by Trinity’s Education for Sustainable Development team on the pathway to embedding sustainability across all Trinity curricula. To wrap up Wednesday’s events there’ll be a panel discussion from 6 to 8 pm in the business building on sustainable careers.
THURSDAY
On Thursday from 11 am to 1 pm there’ll be a workshop in Printing House in partnership with The Work That Reconnects Network based on their book Active Hope: How to Face the Mess We’re in with Unexpected Resilience and Creative Power. Then from 12 to 1 pm, there’ll be an online webinar with Paul Breen, Trinity’s Carbon Reduction Manager, on the challenges of reducing Trinity’s carbon emissions and the work that is currently underway to do so. From 2 to 3 pm, there’ll be an interactive pond workshop and biodiversity tour with Colm Ennis in the Provost’s Garden.
FRIDAY
Finally, on Friday there’ll be an event hosted by the Trinity Urban Garden in the Business Building, where you can swap some seeds for shamrocks, just in time for Saint Patrick’s Day. Green Week will finish with the 1 to 2 pm launch of a biohaven just outside of the Ussher Library for students to relax and enjoy nature.
More information on these events can be found on Trinity’s events calendar or on Trinity Green Campus’ Instagram page, where you can register to attend many of these events and more.
