Students expecting to vote for course representation Wednesday were unable to do so after Trinity College Dublin Students’ Union (TCDSU) announced that voting for both undergraduate and postgraduate taught class representatives would be delayed, citing “circumstances beyond [their] control.”
TCDSU clarified in a statement to the University Times that “both the record number of nominations and the increased number of elections due to postgraduate taught and research individuals contributed” to the closing of polling stations. Polls were originally announced to be open from 10 am to 5 pm from Wednesday, 2 October to Friday, 4 October in the Arts Block, St James’, the Hamilton, the Nursing and Midwifery building and Tallaght for all students with a valid TCard.
TCDSU stated that due to the delay, “online voting will be available from 10am [Thursday] morning, with a form being circulated across our social media channels. This will be live until Saturday at 5pm.” The statement also indicated that the Chair of the Electoral Commission will conduct an investigation into the incident “in the form of a report to Council.”
In-person voting will still be available to all students who wish to participate on Thursday and Friday at all advertised locations, as well as an extra polling period at St James’ from 11 am to 3 pm on Thursday, 3 October.
