SafeZone, Trinity College Dublin’s safety app for students and staff, has been downloaded by 503 people since the start of the 2024/25 academic year. The app is provided by College to give students and staff an easy way to communicate with Trinity Security and emergency services when on campus Since its introduction in 2021, over 3,500 people in Trinity have downloaded SafeZone.

Users can issue alerts to Trinity’s Security team if they feel unsafe or request a member of staff to check in on them if they’re working alone or walking through campus at night. User location data is only ever shared with Trinity’s Estates & Facilities team when a request has been made. SafeZone can also be used to report graffiti and harassment taking place on campus.

In addition, College can use SafeZone to communicate with students and staff regarding issues like weather warnings or events  like the 2023 riots in Dublin city centre. During the riots, when disinformation was spreading quickly online, College sent messages and texts to SafeZone users to keep them informed of campus closures and supports that Trinity was providing to anyone affected by the disturbances.

SafeZone has been promoted by Trinity College Dublin Students’ Union President Jenny Maguire who stated, ‘the SafeZone app provides something very much in short supply: reassurance. With instances of hate crimes and violence against women on the rise, I have found the SafeZone app to be an extra bit of safety when moving around our campus. No matter who or what you are, it’s better to have it downloaded just in case you or those around you ever need it!’

Trinity Estates & Facilities Project Manager Ester Hoban praised the rise in users stating, “We are delighted that so many people have signed up for SafeZone already this

academic year. You may never need to use SafeZone but it’s there for you just in case.”
