Sarah Dunne, a twenty-four year old student in the final year of her Professional Diploma in Education, has been chosen as Trinity’s representative in Miss University Ireland, taking place next month.
Explaining the selection process, Dunne said that usually heats are held in each of the participating universities but that this year was different – instead, candidates simply had to submit an application form with some photographs, as well as providing a link to their Facebook page. Sarah explained that this was so “the judges could see what the girls were like and view more pictures.” Winners were then informed via email of their success.
Dunne, a County Clare native, has previously been successful in other beauty contests: “I’ve been doing it for a few years. I was in the top three in the Ms Irish Sun last year and the top ten in the Ms Sunday World the year before. I’m always doing bits and pieces.”
However, she explained that with a demanding workload in college it has been difficult to find the time: “Since I’ve been in Dublin, I’ve been busy with college, so I haven’t been able to do as much as I would have liked.”
Miss University Ireland is now in its seventh year and is held in Dandelion Bar and Nightclub. Last year’s Trinity representative was Law student Kerry Cahill-Shimasaki, while the competition was won by Dublin Institute of Technology (DIT) student Gemma Fowler. Past winners of the competition include Holly Carpenter who is now one of Ireland’s top models.
