Those who didn’t spend their summer in Dublin might not be aware of the new food places that opened over the last three months. One exciting newcomer can be found just around the corner from Trinity’s Sport Centre, beside Pearse St Dart station. While there now seems to be a complete saturation of doughnut makers in Dublin, the Offbeat Donut Co makes an attempt to introduce something new, while bearing in mind the classic combinations.
They succeed at this, offering titles such as a chocolate sprinkles doughnut and Boston creme. Doughnuts are richly coated in various glazings and contain a fair amount of filling. My personal favourite so far is probably the Ferrero Rocher variety. Coated with Nutella and topped with a rich handful of chopped walnuts, it contained an entire Ferrero Rocher inside, which was an unexpected, but pleasant, surprise. I was lucky to get there earlier in the morning, when the donuts are especially fresh and still warm, making it very hard to leave with only one.
The staff were friendly and helpful and patiently described the flavours of each doughnut to even the most indecisive customers. Although the coffee falls short of the standards of nearby cafes like Coffee Angel, it is still very much drinkable.
These factors ensure that the Offbeat Donut Co definitely has a claim to become a “go-to” spot for an afternoon treat. The price of this combination (coffee and any doughnut) is €4 or any three doughnuts for €6. Doughnuts are also sold by boxes, with any six for €12 or any dozen for €24.
The location of the Offbeat Donut Co is also convenient for Trinity students. Beside Goldsmith Hall, just a short walk away from campus through the Science Gallery passage, it is perhaps too convenient!
