Trinity’s finest marksmen were in action at the Irish Student Archery Association intervarsities in NUI Galway on Saturday for Dublin University Archery Club’s (DUAC) final outing as the indoor archery season draws to a close.
The archery calendar is divided into two seasons, indoor and outdoor. As the curtain closes on the indoor season, the outdoor summer season lies just around the corner. DUAC only gained official status in 2015 and tournaments such as the intervarsities offer a chance for experienced shooters to test themselves against their peers, while also presenting a chance to give experience to new talents.
Trinity’s team was made up of two recurve archers, Eve Kearney and Richard Murray, and one barebow shooter Nicole Maoirano. Given that this was the final event of the year, archers from colleges around the country were hitting top form and the standard on display was high.
Kearney was the outstanding performer from Trinity’s ranks and proved to be on point, shooting a score of 359. Going into the competition, she sat in sixth position in the Recurve Beginner Female leaderboard. With Saturday’s results yet to be posted, Kearney will be hoping to improve on that ranking. Murray was taking part in his first competition but he showed no signs of quivering, scoring a personal best of 215.
A moderate success for DUAC, the club will now be targeting a strong summer season.
