The 152nd Trinity Regatta took place in Islandbridge over the weekend, on a Liffey river bathed in glorious sunshine. Dublin University Ladies Boat Club’s (DULBC) senior eight claimed victory in impressive fashion, defeating two Commercial crews in the heat and final en route to silverware. It was one better for a crew that lost out in the final of last weekend’s University Championships to NUI Galway.
For Dublin University Boat Club’s (DUBC) senior eight, the weekend marked the culmination of a spectacular 10 days, as the crew beat off competition from current national champions Commercial to claim victory by just over a length in a very competitive final. Last weekend, the crew saw off University College Dublin (UCD) in the tightest of races, claiming in the process a 33rd Wylie Cup win.
DUBC’s intermediate and club eights also won their categories at the University Championships, and for the senior eight, it was a second win in a month over UCD, after victory at Colours in March.
Speaking to The University Times in the aftermath of Saturday’s race, David Butler, a member of DUBC’s senior eight, said “it was a good race. We’re just coming off a win at the University Championships this week … we had a tough week this week of training, we didn’t come down from it, we just kept on training through it. So there were tired bodies in the boat, we weren’t at our top speed I don’t think, so it was really great to get that win”.
Elsewhere, Trinity Regatta was a successful one for DULBC’s club four, who defeated two UCD crews to claim an overall win. If the former, which took place early on Saturday morning, was a relatively straightforward victory, the latter was claimed after a tight race. It was an internal affair in the intermediate fours, as DULBC’s A crew narrowly overcame the B crew. Similarly in the intermediate eights, Trinity’s B crew defeated the A crew by more than a length. The novice four also went home with a win.
