With the next week full of AGMs and other end-of-year events, societies are gearing up for the end of term. This week also sees Trinity College Dublin Students’ Union’s (TCDSU) Mental Health Week taking place, which is offering movie screenings, meditation classes and fitness classes to help clear your head.
Monday presents a day full of discourse, with the College Historical Society (the Hist) hosting their final Derby of Rhetoric. Sit and digest a seven-minute long speech on any topic ranging from pop culture to ancient history. Trinity’s Law Society’s (Law Soc) Moot Court Final is also taking place on Monday evening, beginning at 7pm and finishing with a wine reception for all, which is enough incentive to attend this undoubtedly exciting final.
Tuesday will see DU Comedy Society throw their Graduation Gig in association with Mental Health Week. For a cathartic evening to enjoy the society’s greatest acts, join them in the Graduates Memorial Building (GMB) from 7.30pm. If you’re looking for a more time-warped evening, DU History are throwing one of the last balls of the year, the Apollo Ball. In the enticing venue of Christ Church Cathedral’s crypts, this event promises a night of medieval history and dancing. DU Gender Equality Society (DUGES) are holding a workshop entitled “How to Avoid Burning Out”. This event hopes to help students balance study, work and a social life and emphasise self-care. As we enter a stressful time of the year, this peer-led workshop is important in highlighting how essential looking after ourselves is.
Trinity Musical Theatre Society’s West Side Story will premiere on Wednesday after months of rehearsals and preparation. It will run until Friday, showcasing Trinity’s immense talent. If you haven’t already experienced one of theatre’s most unforgettable shows, now is the perfect opportunity. DU Food and Drink are teaming up with Trinity Ents to present “The Rum Runner’s Railway”, a celebration of the wild days of prohibition. Professional mixologists will be concocting different cocktails for each carriage while you swing dance your way to a mystery location. For a more modern evening, An Cumann Gaelach will be throwing An Bál Gaelach in the Davenport Hotel. With a red carpet reception and Irish Oscars, this ball will prove a nice end of year flourish for this year’s winners of the Best Large Society award at the Central Societies Committee (CSC) Awards.
DU Dance will be holding the second class of their Latin and ballroom dancing workshops on Thursday, so even if you missed the first one, you can join them for a free lesson. Trinity Literary Society (LitSoc) will be hosting their last Speakeasy of the year in Chaplin’s Bar, a great opportunity to hear some of the latest work from Trinity’s literary scene. The University Philosophical Society (the Phil) will also be presenting their last debate of the year, “The Individual Can Change the World”, which will discuss that common worry after leaving the nest of college – whether or not we can effect change on the world.
Friday will see the first day of TrinMUN 2017 with the Society for International Affairs (Sofia). This is Dublin’s first-ever Model United Nations conference and runs until Saturday, March 25th. The weekend promises excellent debating and discourse, along with elegant evening receptions.
