Sian Hurst, a wakeboarding fourth year Trinity student, has been nominated for Fermanagh Sports Personality of The Year following a season which saw her win the Gold Medal at the Europe Africa Wakeboarding Championships.
This is the second time Hurst, a Fermanagh local, has been nominated for the award and signals a remarkable comeback after previously struggling with an injury to her knee. “I blew out my ligaments in my knee”, she says, “it takes a year to come back from that physically and then takes a long time to get the confidence back. It is nice to know I have put that behind me now”.
As well as her gold winning performance in Ukraine, Hurst also took first place at the Irish National Championships and finished 7th in two consecutive World Cup Series held in Australia and Indonesia. Speaking to University Times Hurst remarked, “This has been a really great year for me…being nominated for this award is just the icing on the cake. I really have to thank everyone who supported me including my great sponsors Billabong, Ultrasport Europe and The Canal Court Hotel”.
Hurst will be hoping to replicate and add to last year’s successes in 2013 with a hectic schedule of championships and competitions already lined-up. In March she flies to Australia to compete in another World Cup Series event with subsequent trips to Indonesia, Korea and Colombia in the pipeline. And as for her final exams in May? “Balancing my college and wake boarding commitments can be difficult”, she remarks, “but I see no reason why I can’t juggle the two”.
