Samuel Riggs, incoming editor of The University Times, has appointed Junior Freshman TSM German and Philosophy student Edmund Heaphy the next deputy editor for the coming academic year.

Heaphy has been involved in UT since the start of last year, starting by redesigning The University Magazine and later redesigning the broadsheet in his role as creative director. The newly appointed deputy is also credited with the controversial interview with former Naas mayor Darren Scully that received a lot of attention from national media and opened up the discussion on whether or not Fine Gael should have re-admitted him to the party.

Tom Myatt is set to take over UT’s rotating supplements as supplements editor next year. Myatt has previously been a columnist and opinion writer for the broadsheet.

Next year’s section editors will be Fiona Gribben as news editor, Daniel O’Brien as opinion editor, Conor Murphy as features editor and Carl Kinsella as sports editor. Their deputies will be Patrick Lavelle as college affairs, and Ciar McCormick, David Walsh and James Larkin respectively. Daniel Scott, Glenn Mullen and Ben O’Hogain will take up the newly created positions of health sciences, LGBT and Irish language correspondent. Paul Behan is to fill the societies editor position.

Benedict Shegog will be making his debut in the UT editorial staff as photography editor as will Esme Montgomery as copy editor.

News editor Hannah Ryan is UT’s first editorial co-ordinator which will act as an administrator and push forward efforts to gain monetary independence from the Students’ Union through advertising.

The editor-at-large position is to become a split role next year with both Sinéad Baker and Cormac Shine acting as roving reporters and having a hand in administration.

To replace Heaphy as creative director, Caelan Rush will be coming back from his year on erasmus to carry on his work with design and layout.
