A petition to oppose the re-branding of Trinity, including changing the college’s name to “Trinity College, the University of Dublin” and altering the coat of arms has been circulated to all ESCP Europe students, The University Times has learned.

ESCP Europe Business School has campuses in Paris, London, Berlin, Madrid, and Turin. On Tuesday an email was sent from Dr Leslie Shaw, a professor at ESCP and an alumni of Trinity College Dublin, to the students in each of these campuses.

The petition, titled “To the Provost and Board of Trinity College Dublin”, states: “We, the faculty, students, alumni, staff and friends of Trinity College Dublin, hereby call on the Provost and Board to refrain from altering the College name and coat of arms”.

Trinity student Patrick Skehan is currently on Erasmus and studying at Institut d’Etudes Politiques de Paris was informed about the emails earlier this week from a student studying at ESCP Paris. According to Skehan the rebranding exercise “bringing Trinity to some people’s attention, although not for the right reasons”.

The petition has garnered 1,553 signatures thus far. It was shared by the Trinity College Dublin Students’ Union Facebook page on Tuesday and drew a lot of attention as 78 students shared the post and attracted a reach of over 30,000 Facebook users.
