Fourth Week: There’s no Good Reason not to Try Something

Events are free, fun, and you don't need to be a member.

Paul Behan | Societies Editor

So next week is Fourth Week. Essentially it’s Trinity’s society festival and a chance for you to enjoy some free events. The Central Societies Committee gives societies special grants to put on free events for everyone. It is not necessary to be a member of a society to attend its Fourth Week event. In fact, it’s the only opportunity you have to “try before you buy” with student societies. Plus, during fourth week, the crowd won’t just be the active members of societies. There’ll be plenty of other new faces – so if you’re nervous, there’ll be strength in numbers. Also, wine. There’s literally no good reason not to go try something fun and new for free (and possibly make new mates), so like as much as it literally physically pains me to use a hashtag in an article, #GoFourth.

The Best of Fourth Week

Trinity Art’s Festival’s Fourth Week Event – Friday, 7pm, The GMB

Building on the success of their best event-winning Through the Looking Glass, TAF are back with another open-house extravaganza. Quickly becoming a college institution, the TAF fourth-week event is a visual and artistic feast. I can’t tell you too much but essentially TAF are collaborating with a rake of other societies to bring a certain very famous piece of literature back to life in an interactive, theatrical, artistic experience. It’s all being kept under wraps so far but I’m very excited.

Zoo Soc presents Falconry – Thursday, 1pm, The Cricket Pitch

Falcons! Actual Falcons! I found this difficult to process and it kind of makes me feel enraged at every other student society for not bringing falcons – but the important thing is that this is happening and we can deal with the emotional fallout later. Make sure to get down early because the event already has over two hundred people attending on Facebook.

DU History presents “LIBERATOR: The Life & Death of Daniel O’Connell” – Wednesday, 7pm, Glasnevin Cemetery

This event essentially entails a spooky location, one of the most enjoyable orators in Ireland (Prof. Patrick Geoghegan) and a discussion on the historic hun known as the Liberator. There’s also talk of some kind of themed bus. If Shonda Rhimes was an ardent Irish nationalist and organised history themed events, this would be one of those events.

An 1834 portrait of Daniel O’Connell by George Hayter. Prof. Geoghegan is considered the foremost Daniel O’Connell expert, having authored two critically acclaimed books on him.

Knit Soc presents Let’s Make A Blanket – Wednesday, 6pm, House 6

This needs no description beyond the name of the event and honestly sounds like the loveliest possible way to wile away an evening.

5

Trinity Arts Workshop presents Crafty Lunch – Thursday, 1pm, 191 Pearse Street

A bring-your-own lunch arts and crafts explosion. Pack a lunch and make something beautiful.

6

DU Players presents Witness for the Prosecution – Every day, 5pm, Players Theatre

DU Players present a hilarious Law & Order take on Agatha Christie’s most suspenseful drama, where the audience can expect to be on the edge of their seat with that old “whodunnit?” question Directed by Trinity’s resident creative genius, Grace Nuttall, and former University Times societies editor Shona McGarry, this is one play that’s sure not to disappoint.
