Med Students Hope to Break Fundraising Record of €46,000

With the launch of Med Day this morning, medicine students are hoping to break their record of raising €46,000 for charity.

Trinity Med Day 2014 takes place today, with medicine students hitting the city’s streets to raise money for different medical causes. A variety of other fundraising activities will also take place throughout the day. Since 2002, the annual day has raised over €500,000 for healthcare projects. This year, medicine students are hoping to break last year’s total of €46,000.

Student gather early at 6am in Luce Hall before starting their annual street collection at 7am. On campus activities will kick off after lunch with games on the cricket pitch from 1.30pm. These include a 50ft obstacle course bouncy castle, a human foosball table and the traditional inter-year Tug of War. The infamous slave auction will take place at the Pav at 4pm. The evening consists of a talent show followed by a night out.

Med Day has already been gaining significant traction online with students sharing something that makes them happy and donating €2 to med Day by text, before nominating others. Two students have even pledged to continue the tradition of Med Day tattoos if they raise over €1000.

The University Times recently reported the launch of Med Day on Thursday 16th October by its patron, broadcaster Joe Duffy. This years proceeds will go to Palliative Care Services in St. James’ Hospital and Infectious Disease: The Discovery and Treatment of Superbugs, also based in St. James.
