The first round of degree students from Trinity’s National Academy of Dramatic Art, The Lir, graduated yesterday with a a BA in Acting. The fifteen graduates, who finished their training in July this year, have since gone on to find work with institutions such as the Druid Theatre Company, the Lyric in Belfast, the Abbey and Gaiety theatres in Dublin, and the Globe in London.

“This is a momentous occasion for The Lir and Trinity College, and to be celebrating the award of our first Honours degree in Acting.” said Brian Singleton, Academic Director at The Lir Academy. “I’m very proud of the work these students have achieved, which is seen in their success since finishing the course in the summer.”

Singleton, who serves as Trinity’s Samuel Beckett Chair of Drama & Theatre, conceived of the project to serve the need for actors, directors, playwrights and designers within the Irish theatrical, television and film industries. Established in 2011, The Lír is partnered with the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts (RADA) in London, and was built in collaboration with the Cathal Ryan Trust in order to respond to the need for an “academy of excellence” in Ireland. It has since received its own custom-built building on Grand Canal Quay, and offers three undergraduate courses, three postgraduates courses, and a number of short courses.

Earlier this year, The Lir handed out its first diplomas to student in Stage Management and Technical Theatre – these students have since gone on to work with the Gaeity, the Abbey, Wexford Festival Opera, and the Irish Youth Opera.

“I’m so proud of all the staff at The Lir who have delivered for Trinity College first-class training in acting.” concluded Singleton.
