Prof Micheál Ó Siochrú has been appointed the new Head of Trinity’s Department of History following the approval at a meeting of University Council on January 18th.

Ó Siochrú is now the fourth person to hold the position in the last 12 months. Dr Anne Dolan had succeeded Dr Robert Armstrong as Head of Department, but resigned during the Michaelmas term of this academic year. Prof Prof Patrick Geoghegan, a professor in modern history and former Senior Lecturer of the College, served as acting head of the department until Ó Siochrú’s appointment.

As professor of modern history, Prof Ó Siochrú’s primary research focus is on the Irish political, constitutional, urban and military history of the 17th century, with his most recent book examining the Cromwellian conquest and settlement of Ireland.
