A motion addressing the lack of abortion services provided by Trinity Health services was passed at the second Comhairle of 2025, taking place tonight. This motion was proposed by the Gender Equality Officer, Elisa Zito and was seconded by Giulia Villa, AHSS Convenor. The passing of this motion means that the next Welfare & Equality and Gender Equality Officer will be mandated to actively campaign for the college to provide abortion consultation and services. Zito also noted that this would be “a very long term project” so it would mandate the next Gender Equality Officer to continue with the campaign.
A sole speaker against the motion argued that it was a matter of morals and that the passing of motion would be Trinity taking an ethical and political stance. She urged against voting for the motion and called for providing healthcare “without crossing the line of taking a human life.” Following this speech, Zito proclaimed that she would campaign for the motion regardless of whether the motion passed or not. Procedural motion was passed to skip to voting given the overwhelming number of speakers in support of the motion. Speaker-in-favour Aarna Dixit added: the “politicization of the simple healthcare that is abortion is simply abhorrent”.
The motion used a secret ballot for voting, due to its sensitivity.
If the campaign proves successful, Trinity will be the first and only university in Ireland to provide abortion consultation and services in Ireland.
