The first motion to pass during 2nd TCDSU Comhairle will reform the selection of the Standing Committee. The motion passed with little debate following an amendment to retain the current count of 10 Ordinary Committee Members (OCMs) on the Education Committee.

The motion, put forward by Pól Ó hIómhair and seconded by Hugh Ó Ríordan is intended to address the clunkiness of the current selection of Standing Committees process. The proposers argue that this poses a problem for engagement and accessibility, specifically for new class representatives who are discouraged by the amount of time spent on these elections.

Ó hIómhair stressed during his speech to the Comhairle that this election process is “preventing us from doing other important work” and “does not reflect how Comhairle works for the rest of the year.” The Motion to Reform the Selection of Standing Committees proposes changing the elections to selection through open application. This proposal modified the Terms of Reference for the Education, Welfare & Equality and Communications & Marketing committees to make selection of non Ordinary Committee Member positions via application as opposed to being elected at Comhairle.
