A motion was brought by the Trinity College Dublin Students’ Union (TCDSU/AMLCT) president, Grace McNally, on the creation of a sexual violence task force. The motion would establish a committee of council that would include the President and several other sabbatical officers, who would advise and assist in setting campaign strategy in relation to issues of sexual violence. This motion was supposed to occur at the first Comhairle of the year, but it was not proposed by the president at the time.
McNally introduced the motion, stating that such a taskforce was “well needed last year” and would provide a space where “campaigns would be done properly and constitutionally”. She argued that “discussion of sexual violence should never stop but, unfortunately, we have been very quite lately.”
Following McNally, Amy Kennedy, the LGBTQ+ Part-Time Officer, spoke in favour of the motion, with no one speaking against. Kennedy highlighted that the mistakes of last year’s ‘effigy campaign’ “could not be repeated” and that such an error was the result of a breakdown in cooperation between sabbatical officers.
A procedural motion B was then raised to sum up the debate, which passed. The motion was then voted on and passed.
