The incident occurred around 11am this morning. According to official statements from the College, three people were taken to St James’ Hospital due to their injuries. The Dublin Fire Brigade and Gardaí were present at the scene but have since left, saying that the situation was “under control”. It is unclear whether the injured are staff or students, and the College has given no further update on their condition.
The building was closed for cleaning for the rest of the day. Some students said that they were sent home after being told there had been a fire in the building. It is unclear whether the incident actually involved fire. One student said that the accident may have involved acidic substances, however this information has not been confirmed.
This incident comes only two months after the TBSI had to be closed for multiple days due to toxic fumes. The building on Pearse Street houses facilities that carry out research in disciplines such as biomedicine, chemistry, and pharmaceutical sciences.
