Trinity College Dublin Students’ Union TSDSU/AMCLT Presidential campaigner Jonathan Hoffman has received serious sanctions from the Electoral Commission (EC) following an endorsement from prominent social media comedian Rufus Rice on Tuesday February 24th. As a result, Hoffman and his team were banned from in person and online campaigning from 10am to 7:30 pm on February 26th. The Class A sanction of 95 points was applied, with 100 points being the requirement to strike a campaign off the ballot.
The video of Hoffman and Rice featured on Team Hoffman’s Instagram page in which Rice, who was receiving honorary patronage from the TCD Historical Society (Hist), appears alongside Hoffman in the Hist Committee room. In it Rife states, “I am Rufus Rice, cheek clapping chunder monkey of the alps, and I stand for Team Hoffman. It is time to stop wasting your money, build opportunities for students and get a union that is working.”
According to the EC, this breached Section 1.9 Schedule 3, which outlines how campaign teams are forbidden to receive or solicit any sponsorship from organisations internal or external to the college. This may include financial aid, provision of resources and advertising. The EC found that there was a clear acceptance of endorsement and that Hoffman more likely than not solicited such endorsement. In a bid to provide further information on the circumstances, Team Hoffman responded to these claims:
“We have not sought or received sponsorship from any of these organisations or any similar such organisations. The claim that Mr Rice could in any way be interpreted as being an organisation, or as representing one, is utterly risible. The claim that a video being filmed in a publicly accessible room that belongs to a society is in any way reflective of an endorsement from that society is equally as risible.”
According to Gov.UK, Rufus Rice LTD is a Private Limited Company which deals with video production activities. As of their financial reports from September 2025, Mr. Rice is the only employee. By the EC’s conventions this constitutes a violation of Section 1.9 Schedule 3.. The decision of the EC may not be overturned as candidates do not qualify for an appeal unless they have been struck off the ballot. The official statement from the EC is as follows:
“In line with Section 1.6.6.d of Schedule 3, the EC does not comment on “the content or outcome of any investigation or sanction”.”
“To maintain democratic integrity the EC is mandated to investigate and if necessary sanction any breaches of Schedule 3 in either “letter or in spirit”. The EC has continued to enforce election regulations outlined in Schedule 3, by following the procedures set out in Section 1.6, 1.7, 1.8 of Schedule 3. Throughout this entire Sabbatical Election the EC has and will continue to strive towards free, fair and engaged elections.”
According to Hoffman, these sanctions could have negative effects for Team Hoffman as it was the only campaign yesterday not present in highly populated student areas including the Arts Block, Hamilton, and Trinity Hall at such a key point in the election. In an official statement to The University Times, Hoffman expressed his frustration surrounding the legislative technicality which has lead to this disqualification:
“Outside of the realities of the law, if anyone genuinely believes that when he jokingly endorsed Team Hoffman in a student election, in a country he does not even live in, that Mr Rice was speaking on behalf of his limited company, then they need to go outside more.”
“No actual students who viewed our post were of this view.”
“The commission has still failed to answer what specifically constituted a violation and whether Mr Rice’s connection with Rufus Rice LTD was known to them when they made their initial ruling, or whether this connection was made retroactively to justify the obvious flaws in their initial judgement.”
“The commission’s failure to do so makes the positions of those involved in this decision increasingly untenable.”
With the ban now officially lifted, there is no doubt that Team Hoffman will resume their media campaign with a renewed sense of tenacity ahead of the closure of the polls today, Friday February 27th at 4pm.
