The rowing season has officially begun, kicking off to a blazing start for the Dublin University rowing clubs at Newry Head, which took place on the 21st of February. Bested only by the Enniskillen 8 boat, the DUBC Men’s Club 8 boat ranked second out of a total of 78 racers, with a finishing speed of 15 minutes and 23 seconds.
On the whole, our Trinity rowers put on a strong showing, taking up four spots on the leaderboard in the top eleven alone. Most impressive was perhaps the finishing time of the Dublin University Ladies Senior 8 boat, who completed the 5 kilometre race in approximately 16 minutes and 8 seconds – only 1 minute and 23 seconds behind the fastest finishing Men’s Club 8 boat. This performance granted them a commanding victory in their fixture, with DULBC B coming in at second place 33 seconds later.
Despite having to contend with unforgiving weather conditions, our novice ladies rowers put in a commendable effort to complete their first ever race for the Dublin University Ladies Boat Club. While the novice DULBC B boat concluded their run at 19 minutes 34 seconds, the A boat was able to finish in exactly 19 minutes, securing a 35th place finish in the overall rankings.
While the season has started off strong with Newry Head, there is still much to improve on as we look towards our next race at Erne Head, set to take place in Enniskillen on the 7th of March.
