Overview:

Despite difficulties in finding momentum amidst fielding new players,  the Trinity women’s collegiate volleyball team has secured victory in the quarter-final round of the Irish Student Cup, winning a three-set majority of a five-set game against RCSI Dublin. They will now move ahead to play in the semi-final round in the coming weeks.

By all accounts, it appears the women’s team intends to continue their four-year championship dynasty over the Student Cup, and with their latest performance serving as a biopsy of their live, energetic team spirit and insurmountable offense, all signs are pointing to a fifth trophy lining the team’s collection.

Trinity Women’s Collegiate Quarter Finals:

The women’s quarter-final match was marked by a potent in-system offensive effort by Trinity, with an especially dominant middle-blocker attacking presence and an aggressive but calculated service line. Shortcomings in Trinity’s defensive passing and fatigue through drawn out rallies opened the door for RSCI to take two sets off Trinity, however ultimately Trinity’s momentum pulled through to claim the majority.

Though there were uncertainties regarding the team fielding several new players following a second-semester tryout, these players put on a stellar performance, their energies coalescing to drum up a steady rhythm on the court that RCSI simply could not overcome.

The first set of the quarter-final match saw Trinity starting on reception with RCSI to serve – an ideal vantage point for the team given their historically adept serve-receive line and vicious in-system hitters. RCSI sent a mellow float to area one which was smoothly received by libero Nina-Lawan Yung and passed perfectly to setter Katelin Simmons standing just before the net. Simmons jump-set the ball to middle-blocker Ola Majkusiak, who then launched the ball across the court with a well-placed power tip, causing RCSI’s defense to bobble then lose the pass. For many reasons, this initial exchange was indicative of the momentum that carried Trinity throughout the five sets to claim victory; it was mechanical, fast-paced, in-system attacking bolstered by effective serve-reception and overall team flow that rendered RCSI’s efforts, however formidable, ultimately insufficient. Trinity went on to claim the first set with an eight point lead, with the gap in part due to a successful serving run by Catherine Neumeyer and effective wing attacks from Ailis Wynne.

The match marched on as the two teams exchanged blows, with RCSI intermittently gaining momentum and reeling Trinity in by applying hitting pressure to Trinity’s defensive line, resulting in a number of shanked passes and out of system returns. Trinity’s defensive passing reflected a relative weakness in comparison to their iron-clad serve-reception, though this can be credited to the power of two especially strong wing-hitters in RCSI’s lineup, and the pressure they applied in contact, rather than any unforced error by Trinity.

Much of RCSI’s success in keeping up with Trinity rested in the long rally; often times their ability to attack effectively out of system simply exceeded Trinity’s defensive endurance. With a thoroughly capable front row offense and a tactful setter, RCSI consistently made the most of fatigued ball returns. Ultimately, however, RCSI was bleeding points when it mattered. Their scoring runs were often cut short by a missed serve into the net, or a bobbled free-ball, granting Trinity the upper hand in momentum – mistakes they simply couldn’t afford in the face of a masterfully aggressive in-system lineup. Simply put, unforced errors are out of the question when dealing with a team like Trinity.

Majkusiak, captain of the team, in particular put forth an exceptional offensive performance, garnering over twelve kills throughout the game and leading multiple serve streaks with back-to-back aces. She commented thoroughly regarding the match, detailing both the general energies that surrounded the arena and the specific facets of the gameplay:

“We always knew it was going to be a tough match. Playing in their gym made it even more intense – their supporters showed up in numbers and created a loud atmosphere…it added a bit of stress, but honestly it also made the match even more fun to play.”

“We put forth a slightly different lineup than usual. Two visiting students, Kiera and Marie, who recently joined, stepped in as our outside hitters and delivered a great performance. Nina also filled in as libero for the first time and did an incredible job. The three formed a really solid passing line, giving our setter Katelin the ability to use her usual on-court wit while running our offense to the fullest potential. RCSI put up a great fight, they always do – but we stayed focus and kept the energy high. As captain, I’m really proud of the whole team and how everyone stepped up.”

Simmons, noted above by her ‘on-court wit’, also put forth an impressive performance throughout the game, demonstrating excellent setter-hitter utilization that consistently allowed Trinity to regain momentum even in tight rallies. Her constant usage of the middle offense and ability to send the ball fluently between wing and opposite hitters kept RCSI’s defense staggered, and Trinity’s hitters prolific. Her observations regarding the game largely fell in line with Majkusiak’s, as she went on to state:

“Our game against RCSI was our first match with several new players. Although we haven’t played together for long, we showed strong energy along with solid serving and serve-receive, which helped us secure the win in three sets.”

As Trinity continues to sustain their same, grade A level of performance – that garnered them a 9-0 record last semester and the title of Intervarsity Champions at Limerick – throughout the season and into the Cup, their continued reign of glory seems less a likelihood and more a definitive certainty.
