A new research-sharing program organised through TCDSU to show support and offer networking opportunities to PhD candidates at Trinity has wrapped up its second event after a successful inauguration held in February. Now, the event will be renewed twice more in April and May, with several more students chosen to share their research with peers.
Postgraduate Research Officer for TCDSU Lindiwe Mpofu, who was pivotal in the series’ founding, states that with each event she has “the aim of creating a visible, supportive space for PhD researchers across the University. The evening focuses on building confidence among PhD students in sharing their research, encouraging interdisciplinary connections, and strengthening a sense of community across Schools”.
Each networking event is centered on a particular school within Trinity, with precedence given to schools with a high volume of PhD candidates, such as Business and Law, where the first two events were held. Next, the School of Computer Science and the School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences will be hosting events in April and May.
Some of the subjects explored by PhD candidate presenters thus far include ethical AI, ovarian cancer, and corporate grandstanding techniques used in advertising.
In a statement to all PhD candidates, Mpofu said the following: “I want to continue doing all I can to support PhDs and PhD-led initiatives, and to keep sending the message that we are stronger when we stand together. We will continue to work together for the sake, benefit, and visibility of the PhD community. And please let me remind you again, because it matters: you are valued, you are loved, you are appreciated, and you are honoured. We need to get through this journey together, and I truly believe that together, we can.”
