Trinity Cancer Society, one of the largest college societies in Trinity, with almost 1000 members, has this year been tasked with organising the promotion and collection of money for the southside of Dublin city on the nationwide “Pink Ribbon” day, taking place this Friday October 7. The day is co-ordinated by Irish Cancer Society across the streets of Dublin and Ireland, with the aim of raising money for the renowned Cancer charity.
The Trinity Cancer Society is the only college cancer awareness group in Ireland and has had a very successful track record, since its foundation within college six years ago. Known for its innovative fundraising activities including the infamous naked calendar and Movember, this year is the first time that the group are co-coordinating money collection across the entire Southside of the City on “Pink Ribbon” day.
Cancer Soc chairperson, Becca Roache told The University Times that the decision to grant the Southside of the City to the Trinity society, demonstrated the faith that the Irish Cancer Society has in Trinity students: “We were so happy when The Irish Cancer Society approached us with such a big responsibility and it really shows how much faith they have in us and how our relationship has really grown with them”. She also added that it has been a challenge for the society team, but one they are enjoying and are more than able for: “It has been a challenge to recruit more volunteers but we are definitely up to the challenge and I see this as an even bigger stepping stone for the society”. Since it’s foundation in college, the society has raised in excess of €100,000, €25,000 of this being from fundraising efforts in 2010 alone.
With the big task at hand for the group, the Cancer Society is seeking volunteers to help take part in the national collection this coming Friday, sign up will take place tomorrow (Thursday October 6) at the Cancer Soc stand in the Arts Block or by contacting the chairperson Becca Roache by emailing [email protected] or by telephone on 0872225704.
