Freshers’ Week To Do List

Anna Harrington takes a look at some of the key society events taking place this Freshers' Week

Monday
· Free Food: LawSoc have free food on the hour every hour. Look out for their stand in Front Square and subtly lurk beside it when hungry.
· Afternoon: 2.30pm in The Chamber, GMB is The Phil’s ‘speed dating’ event, which is inevitably horribly awkward but also hilarious and a great way to start meeting all of your new best friends. Prizes consist of vibrators and fleshlights.
· Evening: Players’ Improv Night in Players Theatre starts at 4pm, and will see both Trinity students and actual comedians doing (hopefully) hilarious improvisation comedy that you can get merry to.
· Night: The Hist are hosting a pub crawl at 7pm, starting with a reception in their Conversation Room. The Hist are great at a good dose of pub banter over cheap pints, so this is a good one both for those looking to get involved with the society and those who need a vehicle for Monday evening drinking.

Tuesday
· Free Food: Swinging by the Food and Drink Society stand, which has a prominent red canopy, is always a safe bet to score some free lunch. My memories of former years also suggest that things will be on the substantial side, with Avoca breads and cheeses on offer to new members.
· Afternoon: At 1pm SciFi Soc, based in Goldsmith Hall, are holding a retro gaming tournament in their comfortable new room. Follow this with LawSoc’s circus-themed ‘LawFest’ on the Cricket Pitch from 3-5, which involves games, music, and crucially, more free food.
· Evening: Cumman Gaelach are hosting a pub crawl as Gaeilge starting at the Pav at 7pm. Controversially a Viking pub crawl hosted by the Scandanavian Society takes place the same night at 6pm to rival these celtic warriors. This one starts at Trinity Hall, and legendary Halls local Mother Reilly’s is its first stop.
· Night: The Juggling Society have some juggling planned for outside the circus-themed Trinity Ents night out in association with LawSoc and Players, which takes place at the Grand Social.

Wednesday
· Free Food: Players have free food and breakfast in Players Theatre from 10-1. While you’re there you can even audition for one of their Freshers’ Festival shows from 12-5, such as the adaptation of Paddington Bear, which are open to anyone who has never been in a Players show before.
· Afternoon: The Metaphysical Society (a.k.a. The Metafizz) has a slot on Trinity FM at 1pm to discuss all matters wacky and philosophical, and to introduce members to the ‘real’ philosophical society. You can tune into TFM, last year’s winner of the Central Societies Committee (CSC) ‘Best Society’ award, on www.trinityfm.com or 92.1FM. After that, the Cancer Society Treasure Hunt is leaving from their stand in Front Square at 2pm. Also at 2pm is Art Bomb, another event set to be a highlight of the week, as creative societies including Trinity Arts Festival and Visual Arts come together in the Atrium for an afternoon of performances, activities, and artistic fun.
· Evening: Labour Youth, Ógra Fianna Fáil, Young Fine Gael, and the Politics Society come together at 5pm in room 50 in the Atrium to host an event called “Why Join My Party,” debating and giving an introduction to getting involved with each society. At 6pm in Studio 191 on Pearse Street, Trinity Arts Workshop are holding a wine reception as an introduction to their classes and teachers.

Thursday
· Free Food: The Sociology Society is holding a free mid-week-slump breakfast in KC Peaches on Dame Street at 10.30am.
· Afternoon: The Scandinavian Society are leading a trip to IKEA, leaving at 1pm from Nassau Street Entrance, with a scavenger hunt and prizes. An exciting trip for the IKEA enthusiast, which is everyone. If you want a short break from rampant consumerism, however, the Environment Society are holding a picnic in the Rose Garden (behind the Museum Building) from 12-3pm.
· Evening: Suas Trinity, part of the larger Suas Educational Development network, have a welcome reception planned for 7pm in the Atrium. A good opportunity for anyone looking to get involved in volunteering in Asia and Africa during their college summers. Alternatively, for a bit more speed dating, the Alternative Music Society are running a musical speed dating evening in Chaplin’s Bar (beside the Screen Cinema) from 7.30pm.
· Night: The Phil’s annual ‘Club Philth’ night in association with Trinity Ents follows their comedy debate and reception, and has a tropical festival theme complete with alleged pools of glitter.

Friday
· Free Food: The Phil’s Conversation Room and Front Square stands seem to both be excellent locations for free food, with crêpes from Lemon, burritos from Tuzo, and pizza from Café de Napoli promised throughout the week. The Hist also have a constant stream of breakfast, candyfloss, and popcorn in their Conversation Room upstairs in the GMB.
· Afternoon:. If you’re up for some active culture on this lazy Friday afternoon, the Scandanavian Society are holding a Viking walking tour, starting from Central Bank on Dame Street at 1pm.
· Evening: Visual Arts Society are hosting a ‘Culture Crawl’ at 5pm. Beginning in their society room in House 6, they will talk art, admire the work from the week, and go and explore as many Dublin Culture Night events as possible en masse. An excellent cultural end to the week.
