The beginning of February, the “month of love,” can arouse feelings of dread for some (myself included). Displays of giant red hearts, red roses and happy couples: Thanks for reminding me of my singleness. But if you catch yourself feeling the valentine’s blues, I come bearing a solution – or five. A night out with your pals in any of these five spots will guarantee that warm and fuzzy feeling.

Layla’s Rooftop

Based in the heart of Ranelagh, this restaurant offers a wide range of options. While there, I dared myself to try the octopus entree. This was accompanied with lightly roasted baby potato, crunchy samphire and fresh mixed olives. The tanginess of the olives coupled with the smooth and smoky octopus awakened my taste buds easing me into my main course: a mouth-watering portion of prawn linguine, nduja and cherry tomatoes. This was followed by a fudge-style brownie with refreshing vanilla ice-cream. Food aside, the highlight of my experience here was the ambiance. We opted for indoor seating and the interior dimmed with fairy lights and smooth jazz music simply created that warm feeling. To top that, the staff were so attentive, and they made our comfort paramount. As I wanted a mocktail that wasn’t available on the menu, the bartender was kind enough to make one on the spot. In addition, one has the option of dining on the terrace, overlooking Ranelagh’s main street.

Baraza

A random stroll by Bachelor’s Walk led me to this hidden gem. Looking at the menu from outside, the €17 ribeye steak caught my eye. Inside is spacious, with adornments inspired by the east African coast. Soft instrumental music created a tranquil vibe. Baraza’s “modern European cuisine” menu consists mainly of tapas, as well as a selection of main dishes that range from 8-20 euro. There’s also a daily offer of “three for €20”. This is a great option for those looking to try the variety ranging from skewers to scallops. While there, I opted for the steak (obviously) and every piece of it was a slice of heaven. The steak’s smoky and fiery flavours were well balanced with the refreshing and tangy side of salsa Verde. I’m planning a second visit.

The Bank Bar and Restaurant on College Green

Based in a historic building, the bank’s interior, with its high, decorated ceiling, is akin to a renaissance painting. It’s the perfect place for a more sophisticated and elegant dining experience. The drinks menu is eye catching, with an impressive variety of cocktails. While there, I tried the “bank’s overdraft” cocktail, a mixture of vodka, fresh strawberries, basil, and agave syrup, which didn’t disappoint in terms of sweetness. Food wise, I found the menu to be a little limited with only a handful of main courses. Nonetheless, I had a satisfactory plate of roasted fillet cod that was served in a rich creamy and citrus sauce with mussels. The live piano music played in the evenings also adds that extra layer of elegance. The piano man will surely have you swinging your blues away while sipping on some flavourful cocktails.

Elephant and Castle at the Mayson Hotel

Located in the industrious area of North Wall Quay, this restaurant offers a place of calm and tranquil in the rather busy surrounding. The modern interior comprises a sizable bar area, wooden ceilings, low hanging lights and large glass windows, all contributing to a low-key atmosphere. Glancing at the menu, the spicy chicken wings served with blue cheese and celery sticks were enticing. The wings, coated with a salty turmeric and chilli rich sauce were not short of flavour and spice. However the striploin steak I had whilst here only topped the starter. The huge portion, served with a side of roast tomato, mushroom, chunky chips and peppercorn sauce, went down a treat. Elephant and castle really is an ideal location for celebrations such birthdays and, of course, Galentine’s Day. If you’re lucky enough the stuff might pass you a free dessert or some heart-shaped chocolates.

Mackenzie’s

Famous for their brunch box and pancake platters, this upbeat restaurant in the heart of Grand Canal Dock, offers a lively dining experience. My intention was to try the mouth-watering buttermilk pancakes but, sadly, I missed the 3:30pm finishing time. I opted for the pear and walnut firewood pizza instead. Topped with baby spinach, mushroom and blue cheese: this combination of soft and non-overpowering flavours made for a decent meal. Drinks wise, the cocktails, although limited in selection, are very affordable with prices ranging from €8.50-€11. So why not splurge?
