The start of another college year is finally upon us, bringing with it the return of Freshers’ Week. For both new and continuing students, it offers an abundance of opportunities to get involved in campus life. The number of offerings may seem daunting at first—Trinity has over 120 societies, and 50 sports clubs–but there’s no need to worry, as there are plenty of resources to help you find which ones are right for you.

The Freshers’ Fair, which starts on September 16th and takes place in Front Square, is a great way to learn about Trinity’s many clubs and societies directly from their committees. With different booths set up for each one, it is the perfect time to ask any questions you may have and see what piques your interest. At the very least, you’ll probably walk away with at least one free sticker or tote bag, as many societies run giveaways during the fair. In addition to loads of free swag, many societies will also host fun events throughout the week, such as pub quizzes and speed friending, which are a great way to meet like-minded people and get a feel for societies you are potentially interested in joining. Information about these events will be available both at the fair and online, so don’t worry if you don’t get the chance to stop by a particular booth. Trinity’s comprehensive societies guide can be found at trinitysocieties.ie, and many societies also have social media accounts where more specific information can be found. Make sure to give Trinity Ents a follow at @trinityentsiamsa on Instagram, as well as the official TCD account, @trinitycollegedublin, where you’ll be able to find schedules and updates posted each day (and don’t forget to follow @universitytimes for all your news!)

The Freshers’ Fair can seem quite chaotic, so it can be helpful to peruse the societies guide in advance if you aren’t sure where to start. Whether you’re interested in trad music or knitting, there is a huge range of societies available, with something for everyone. If you aren’t sure what interests you, it’s a great time to try something new-you might find your new favourite hobby! The Fair is meant to be fun, and give you a taste of different societies, so no worries if you realise something isn’t your speed, you don’t have to commit to anything instantly. You can shop around before making any decisions.

With the anxiety that comes with Week 1 of term, it’s also important to remember that it’s okay to sit things out. There will be events running throughout the week, so there’s no pressure to attend everything. Don’t forget that the purpose of these society events is to meet new people and get acclimated to college life–so don’t hesitate to come alone! Whether you’re flying solo or attending with friends, you are still welcome and encouraged to attend any events that spark your interest. They say you never forget your first Freshers’ week, and attending these experiences is a great way to make the most of it.

Whether it is your first week of college or just your first week back, Freshers’ is a great way to set the tone for the upcoming Michaelmas term. It can seem overwhelming, but remember that these events and resources are here for you to make the most of your college experience, this looks different for everyone. Do what is best for you, and have fun!
