This Saturday, Dublin University Hockey Club (DUHC) 1st XI went away to play Weston at The King’s Hospital School and returned with a strong 1-0 win.

A rainy and cold setting saw the men have a slow start, building pressure against an experienced and more senior side. The first half saw a good display of patience with Alex Murphy controlling the midfield, working well with John O’Hara and Thomas Bean in defense. However, despite two penalty corner opportunities, DUHC were unable to convert and the score remained 0-0 going into half time.

The weather continued to work against the men in the second half, but a more determined and direct team appeared. Weston moved the ball well, but they were unable to find an answer to Trinity’s consistent pressure. An excellent display of individual skill from Zac Varian and a reverse stick shot found Christopher Varian on the back post for a great deflection, putting the team 1-0 in front in the third quarter. A great team-goal, the result of continuous yet patient attacking pressure to outmanoeuvre Weston’s slow backline.

Going into the final quarter, Weston looked to push back, but DUHC’s strong backline and defensive composure ensured that the men stayed ahead. In contrast, Weston’s lack of discipline caused them to lose a player to a yellow card as they remained a goal behind. A poor penalty corner saw Weston’s attack end as technical mistakes continued to be costly. Trinity remained firmly in control, playing patient and calm hockey. The final whistle went, securing Trinity three points in Division 1A. It was a thoroughly deserved win and an impressive display of tactical awareness.

DUHC 1st XI currently sit in fifth position in Leinster Division 1A, joint with Weston. This win will see them move beyond that as they look to fight for the top spot in the league. Their next contest is against rivals UCD Men’s 1st XI at home next weekend, where the team will look to emulate the skill from this week and secure another three points.
