Relay for Life, a student-led charity initiative supporting the Irish Cancer Society, will be taking place at Trinity on January 27th, this marks the first Relay for Life event of the year. Relay for Life is a twenty-four walk-a–thon in honour of those suffering for cancer.
Organised by Trinity Cancer Society, the event titled Candle of Hope, is a smaller-scale adaptation of the Relay for Life campaign. Relay for Life events traditionally run for twenty-four hours, with the relay symbolising the continuous struggle of cancer survivors and how it affects both them and their families. Cancer soc’s version will run for twelve hours from 10am to 10pm.
Participants will walk continuously around the track through the day, while a range of activities will take place in the GMB. There will be a total of ten Trinity societies and groups walking the relay including the JCR, TES, The Hist, The Phil, ‘Train Girls’, Ashima, MovemberTCD, VDP Comedy Soc, and French Soc.
For those who still want to take part but are not walking there is a range of activities happening as part of the ‘GMB Takeover.’ Some of which include TCD Sport providing spin bikes and rowing machines as part of the Spin-a-thon from 10 am to 4:30. As well as the GMB’s Resource Room being transformed into a Irish Cancer Society x Trinity Cancer Society space, where attendees can learn more about the organization, buy merchandise, and decorate candle bags which can be purchased for 3 euro. Other events include Law Soc’s Breakfast at 10, The Phil’s Timothee Chalamet Look alike Contest at 2, and a HistBall Rafle at 4.
The Candle of Hope Ceremony, will be taking place at 5:30, and is the focal point of the day. Each candle lit represents a loved one affected by cancer. The ceremony also includes readings, a minute’s silence, and a survivors walk.
Following the ceremony, the program doesn’t end their will comedy performances, live music, DUDJ boiler room, all being held in the Buttery. The event is non-alcoholic and is sponsored by Red Bull, Honey Truffle, and the SMF.
Tickets for the GMB and Buttery are available for 5 euro each or 7 euro combines, with all proceeds going directly to cancer support services. Donations to Relay for Life teams can be made via https://www.relayforlife.ie/event/trinity-college .
