Over a period of three weeks, Trinity Law Society, in partnership with Free Legal Advice Centres (FLAC) and Trinity ENTS, collaborated to organise a series of events leading up to the Big Fat Wedding on the evening of February 18th. We had the opportunity to interview the event organisers Kitty Carolan, Labhraidh Castello and Bella McMahon about the reasons behind this project. This is the first time Trinity has organised the Trinity Big Fat Wedding, which raised more than €7,000 for each society’s charities. The idea first came about during a discussion between Kitty Carolan, charities officer for Law Soc, and Labhraidh Castello, Irish Officer for FLAC, a charity that focuses on providing free legal aid in Ireland. The idea was inspired by fake weddings in US colleges to “raise money for our respective charities in a fun and novel way,” explains Kitty Carolan. The concept was then discussed with Bella MacMahon from the ENTS committee, and subsequently debated by the three organisers in their respective societies before opening up applications to the whole university. The 12 participants, divided into 6 couples,  each couple set up a dedicated donation page, and took part in a couples photoshoot and short interview. The process of organising the whole event began in October, with a number of smaller events planned with the aim of raising even more money leading up to the Wedding.

Law Soc chose to raise money for Dublin Simon Community, a charity aiming to reduce homelessness in the Dublin area, while FLAC chose its own charity and ENTS chose Women’s Aid. On February 11th 2026, a Stag and Hen do pub crawl was held to raise funds and get to know the couples better, followed on the 13th by an engagement party at Pav Friday, where a game show-style interview was organised to announce the winning couple. The participating couples were as follows, Máire and Luke, Molly and Seb, Josie and Kiana, Teddy and Michael, Freddie and Geoff, Auguste and Oscar. The winning couple was chosen based on their popularity and the amount of money raised throughout their campaign.

The lucky winners were Molly and Seb, who raised over €2,000, while the others were able to be bridesmaids and groomsmen for the big night. The winning couple appeared in videos and made green flags in partnership with Too Into You, a faction of Women’s Aid that promotes healthy relationships. The wedding was held on February 18th in the atrium, followed by an after-party at Bewley’s.

The wedding was sponsored by Laylow Alcoholic Peach Ice Tea, Coole Swan, Fíor Jewellery for the rings and Irish Green Guys for the bouquets. As for the music, Trinitones, Ceol Kitchen Sink and Sean Power and the Main Street band and Friends performed, and there were more than six DJ sets for the after party.

The Big Fat Wedding was a huge success, raising over €7,000 for charity, with close collaboration between Law Soc, FLAC and ENTS, who hope to see this tradition persist in the future.
