- “we may not be through with the past but the past is through with us”, films by Simon Liu
East Asia Film Festival of Ireland is collaborating with Artists’ and Experimental Moving Image (aemi) to present four Hong Kong shorts by the spectacular and dizzying filmmaker Simon Liu. The screening will take place in Trinity’s Arts Technology Research Lab on March 18th at 6.30pm. Tickets cost €5 and can be purchased from aemi’s Eventbrite page.
- Frodon on Jean-Luc Godard
On March 28th at 2.15pm former editor in chief of Cahiers du cinema, Jean-Michel Frodon will be delivering a talk on Jean-Luc Godard’s “second chapter” as a filmmaker. Titled ‘JLG – The Second Act’, the talk has been organised by the Irish Film Institute as part of ‘Truth: 24 times per second’, their ongoing retrospective on Godard.
- Dublin University Film Festival
DU Film Society’s annual film festival is scheduled for March 29th with the shorts competition screening at 11am in the Light House. DUFF promises an international programme along with a guest speaker series featuring leading industry professionals. Three films by student filmmakers from Trinity will also be screening on the Sunday morning (Radius met with these filmmakers for an interview which can be found in this issue). - John Woo’s Hard Boiled
On 29th March at 3pm the Light House is screening a landmark of the Hong Kong action scene, John Woo’s 1992 Hard Boiled, the action sequences of which are globally considered the most accomplished in the history of the genre. The film is about a cop, Tequila (Chow Yun-fat), who after losing his partner, joins forces with an undercover gangster hitman (Tony Leung) to catch those responsible for his friend’s death.
- Dublin Smartphone Film Festival
DubSmartFF is back for its ninth edition on April 11th at the Pearse Centre in the heart of the city. This is Ireland’s only international film festival dedicated exclusively to mobile filmmaking. With a €16 ticket attendees will be able to view 25 carefully curated films in the festival’s newly expanded shorts programme.
