Matilda Brewe Elected President of the Phil

Brewe will succeed current President Liam Corcoran for the 2026/2027 academic year

Matilda Brewe was elected President of the University Philosophical Society (the Phil) for the 342nd session on April 7th on the first count with 101 votes, defeating Fionn Graham and Aaliyah Mullen, who received 25 and 30 votes, respectively. 

The results announcement was kicked off by Annika Ramani, former Phil President for the 340th session, and chair of the Phil’s Election Oversight Committee, on the steps of the GMB at 6:04pm. About 50 people gathered for the event. Announcements finished at 6:12pm.

Brewe is the current Secretary of the Phil, and was previously the Pro-Secretary of the society. Brewe is a Junior Sophister History student, and as is tradition, will be taking a year out of her studies to serve as Phil President full-time.

According to Brewe’s manifesto, her priority is to “ensure the best year possible for all members, from Council to casual chamber enjoyers”. She also promises to “ensure that our finances center the needs of our members”, “prioritise access to debating through thoughtful and fun Schools programmes”, “invite a diverse range of HonPats”, “step in when you are feeling overwhelmed”, “allowing all people on Council to take the breaks they need”, and “lead with the love that I feel for the Phil, working hard to make the Phil a safe and fun place for Council, subcommittees, and regular members alike”.

Brewe will succeed the current President, Liam Corcoran, after the Phil’s Annual General Meeting.

Other members of Council for the Phil’s 342nd session were also elected as follows: 

Therese Askarbek was elected Secretary by 84 votes, defeating Elizabeth O’Brien and Tabib Haque. 

Zoya Shahid was elected Treasurer, having run uncontested. Shahid received 145 votes. 

Olivia Tranguch was elected Registrar, having run uncontested. Tranguch received 151 votes. 

Nare Paronyan was elected Debates Convener with 71 votes, defeating Henrietta Vanni, who received 51 votes.

Caroline Kendall was elected Librarian with 87 votes, defeating Aoibhínn O’Mahoney, who received 39 votes.

Gabriel Scheibal was elected Steward, having run uncontested. Scheibal received 142 votes. 

Abigail Donohoe was elected Schools Convener with 71 votes, defeating Tanvi Sethi who received 57 votes.

Adrianna Mazur was elected Senior Member of Committee (SMC) with 74 votes, defeating Nakai Mudiwa, who received 61 votes, 27 abstaining.

James Prendergast was elected Auteur, having run uncontested. Prendergast received 137 votes with 25 abstaining. 

Jemima Eastwood & Loretta Farrell were elected Co-Presidents of the Elizabethan Society (Eliz), the women and gender-minorities subcommittee of the Phil. They received 89 votes with 9 abstaining. They ran uncontested.
