United Nations Special Rapporteur on Palestine, Francesca Albanese, will give a lecture on the failure of EU values in Trinity. The Ireland Palestine Alliance and Academia for Palestine announced that the lecture will take place in the Ed Burke Theatre, on Wednesday 4th November, at 6pm.
Albanese is one of the world’s leading experts on the human rights situation in Palestine. In March of 2024, she reported to the UN Human Rights Council that Israel was committing a genocide in the Occupied Territories.
UN Special Rapporteurs are the United Nation’s subject matter experts in regards to human rights issues. Albanese was appointed as the Special Rapporteur on Palestine in 2022, and has been an outspoken advocate for peace and highlighting the devastating actions of Israel in the Occupied Territories.
She has also been an outspoken critic of the inaction of the EU in regards to Palestine, stating in June of 2025, “I call for these top EU officials, and others, to face charges of complicity of war crimes over their support for Israel’s 19 months of assault on Gaza. This cannot be met with impunity.”
Additionally, Albanese has criticised EU countries for allowing the passage of US military aircraft through their air space stating, “Italian, French and Greek citizens deserve to know that every political action violating the int’l [international] legal order, weakens and endangers all of them. And all of us.”
